There is no better training for the unpredictability of photojournalism than photographing children. They are restless; constantly moving with an ever changing array of emotions and energies. They are incooperative. They are irrational. They are difficult to understand and keep up with. And if you can master photoraphing something like that, then you can photograph anything.
During the summer of 2018, I worked as the camp photographer and office manager at YMCA Camp Shady Brook in Deckers, Colorado. My job was to take pictures of the campers and post the to the camp website for the parents to see, but my goal was much bigger than that. I grew up at this camp, and I knew just how much those photos- those memories- meant to all of the kids that came and went each week of the summer. So I made it my goal to not just simply take pictures of the children, but to capture the true spirit of summer camp, or what those at CSB refer to as Camp Magic.
